In December, unemployment rates were higher in 7 states, lower in 5 states, and
stable in 38 states and the District of Columbia. Nonfarm payroll employment
decreased in 1 state and was essentially unchanged in 49 states and the District.

Jobless rates were lower in December than a year earlier in 244 of the 389 metropolitan
areas, higher in 115, and unchanged in 30. Nonfarm payroll employment increased over
the year in 81 metropolitan areas and was essentially unchanged in 308.
