In January, unemployment rates were higher in 4 states, lower in 2 states, and stable in 44 states and the District of Columbia. Nonfarm payroll employment increased in 8 states and was essentially unchanged in 42 states and the District.

January jobless rates up over the year in 218 of 389 metro areas; payroll jobs up in 59

Jobless rates were higher in January than a year earlier in 218 of the 389 metropolitan areas, lower in 148, and unchanged in 23. Nonfarm payroll employment increased over the year in 59 metropolitan areas, decreased in 3, and was essentially unchanged in 327.
