307 metro areas had over-the-year employment decreases in June 2020

July 31, 2020

From June 2019 to June 2020, 307 metropolitan areas had decreases in nonfarm payroll employment and 82 were essentially unchanged. Employment in Atlantic City-Hammonton and Ocean City, both in New Jersey, decreased by 29.2 percent and 28.7 percent, respectively. These were the largest over-the-year percentage losses in employment among metropolitan areas. Employment decreased 40,000 in the Atlantic City area and 15,600 in the Ocean City area.

For the year ended June 2020, nonfarm employment declined in all of the 51 metropolitan areas with a 2010 Census population of 1 million or more. In New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ-PA, employment decreased by 1,549,100, a −15.4-percent change, the largest over-the-year percentage decrease among large metropolitan areas. In Boston-Cambridge-Nashua, MA-NH employment decreased by 399,700, or 14.0 percent. In Chicago-Naperville-Elgin, IL-IN-WI, employment decreased 466,800  or 9.7 percent.
