Ames, Iowa, and Burlington-South Burlington, Vermont, had the lowest unemployment rates among the 389 metropolitan areas in May 2019, 1.5 percent each. The rates for those areas were followed by Midland, Texas, 1.7 percent; Iowa City, Iowa, 1.8 percent; and Dubuque, Iowa, 1.9 percent. Yuma, Arizona (17.1 percent), and El Centro, California (16.4 percent), had the highest unemployment rates. A total of 197 areas had May jobless rates below the U.S. rate of 3.4 percent, 178 areas had rates above it, and 14 areas had rates equal to that of the nation.

Of the 51 metropolitan areas with a 2010 Census population of 1 million or more, Austin-Round Rock, Texas, San Francisco-Oakland-Hayward, California, and San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, California, had the lowest unemployment rates in May, 2.2 percent each. Detroit-Warren-Dearborn, Michigan, had the highest jobless rate among the large areas, 4.3 percent.
