Nonfarm employment up 1.8 million, or 1.2 percent, from September 2016 to September 2017

From September 2016 to September 2017, total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 1,777,000, or 1.2 percent. Professional and business services added 528,000 jobs, an increase of 2.6 percent, while education and health services employment increased by 472,000, or 2.1 percent.

Among major industries in September 2017, mining and logging had the largest over-the-year percentage increase in employment with 9.1 percent, or 60,000 jobs. Other industries with an over-the-year percentage increase in employment of 2.0 percent or higher were construction (2.7 percent, or 184,000) and transportation and warehousing (2.2 percent, or 109,500).

Over the 12 months ending in September 2017, information had an employment decrease of −2.8 percent, or −79,000.
