31 percent of employed veterans with a disability worked in government in August 2016

There were about 9.9 million employed veterans in August 2016. About 2.0 million of these veterans had a service-connected disability. Many veterans with a service-connected disability worked in the public sector. In August 2016, 31 percent of employed veterans with a disability worked in federal, state, or local government, compared with 19 percent of veterans with no disability and 13 percent of nonveterans.

Similar percentages of veterans and nonveterans were self-employed in August 2016. Among the employed, 4.6 percent of veterans with a service-connected disability were self-employed. That was little different from the 6.9 percent of veterans with no disability and 5.7 percent of nonveterans.
