Wages and salaries for private industry workers increase 2.6 percent over the year ended June 2016

Compensation costs for private industry workers increased 2.4 percent over the year ended June 2016. Wages and salaries, which make up about 70 percent of total compensation, increased 2.6 percent over the 12 months. Benefits, which make up the remaining 30 percent of compensation costs, increased 1.7 percent. Each of these increases was greater than the increases recorded in the prior year. From June 2014 to June 2015, costs for wages and salaries for private industry workers increased 2.2 percent and costs for benefits increased 1.4 percent.

Compensation costs for state and local government workers increased 2.3 percent for the 12-month period ending in June 2016. Costs for wages and salaries for state and local government workers increased 1.7 percent and the cost of their benefits increased 3.4 percent.
