Employment up in 36 of 38 large metro areas, April 2013 to April 2014

Over the 12 months from April 2013 to April 2014, nonfarm employment rose in 36 of the 38 metropolitan areas with annual average employment levels above 750,000 in 2013. The largest over-the-year percentage increase in employment in these large metropolitan areas occurred in Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford, Florida (+4.5 percent), followed by San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, California (+4.0 percent), and Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, Texas (+3.8 percent). The over-the-year percentage decreases in employment occurred in Detroit-Warren-Livonia, Michigan, and Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News, Virginia-North Carolina (−0.3 percent each).

The over-the-year employment increase in Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington was also one of the largest when measured by number of employees; in April 2014 employment in Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington was up 115,900 compared with a year earlier. The largest over-the-year employment increase occurred in Los Angeles-Long Beach-Santa Ana, California (+118,200, an increase of 2.1 percent). The largest over-the-year decrease in employment occurred in Detroit-Warren-Livonia, Michigan (−5,500).

Among all of the nation's metropolitan areas, nonfarm payroll employment increased from April 2013 to April 2014 in 302 metropolitan areas, decreased in 63 areas, and was unchanged in 7 areas.
