Decline in married-couple families with both spouses employed

The proportion of all married-couple families in which both the husband and the wife were employed declined by 0.5 percentage point in 2001 to 52.7 percent.

The proportion of all married-couple families in which only the husband worked edged up to 19.4 percent in 2001, from 19.2 percent in 2000. The proportion in which only the wife worked increased by 0.4 percentage point, to 5.8 percent in 2001.
