1. What is the Business Response Survey?

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has developed the Business Reponse Survey (BRS) to field timely and relevant establishment surveys for BLS.

2. When will these data be released?

Data for the 2022 Business Response Survey on Telework, Hiring, and Vacancies were released on March 22, 2023

Data for the 2021 Business Response Survey to the COVID-19 Pandemic were released on February 9, 2022.

Data for the 2020 Business Response Survey to the COVID-19 Pandemic were released on December 7, 2020.

3. When were these data collected?

Data for the 2022 survey were collected from August 1, 2022 through September 30, 2022.

Data for the 2021 survey were collected from July 28, 2021 through September 30, 2021.

Data for the 2020 survey were collected from July 20, 2020 through September 30, 2020.

4. How were the data collected?

The BRS is collected entirely online. Respondents are solicited via email and printed letters. 

5. How was the sample designed?

For the 2022 BRS, BLS selected a sample of approximately 340,000 establishments. More information about the sample can be found in the 2022 Technical Notes.

For the 2021 BRS, BLS selected a sample of approximately 323,000 establishments. More information about the sample can be found in the 2021 Technical Notes.

For the 2020 BRS, BLS selected a sample of approximately 597,000 establishments. More information about the sample can be found in the 2020 Technical Notes.

The objective for the surveys is to produce statistics at detailed levels including by size class, state, industry, and some state-industry, state-size combinations. 

6. Will these data be updated?

The 2020, 2021, and 2022 BRS were one-time surveys with different questions aimed at better understanding business' responses to the coronavirus pandemic, and their experiences with telework, hiring, and vacancies as we begin to emerge from the pandemic.
