Quits rates down in 16 states, up in 1 state in June 2023

From May 2023 to June 2023, quits rates decreased in 16 states, increased in 1 state, and were little changed in 33 states and the District of Columbia. The largest decreases in quits rates occurred in Maine (−1.2 percentage points) and Delaware (−1.0 percentage point), as well as in Alabama and Vermont (−0.9 percentage point each). The quits rate increased from 2.6 percent to 3.1 percent in Kansas.

Job openings rates decreased in 4 states and increased in 2 states over the month. The decreases occurred in North Carolina (−0.8 percentage point), as well as in Illinois, Iowa, and Kentucky (−0.6 percentage point each). The increases occurred in California and New Jersey (0.6 percentage point each).
In June, hires rates decreased in the following seven states: Washington (−1.1 percentage point), Alaska (−1.0 percentage point), Indiana (−0.9 percentage point), Oregon, Minnesota, and Arizona (−0.8 percentage point each), and Tennessee (−0.7 percentage point). An increase in the hires rate occurred in California, from 2.9 percent in May 2023 to 3.3 percent in June 2023.
Total separations rates decreased in 11 states and increased in 1 state. The largest decreases in occurred in Delaware (−1.3 percentage points), as well as in Maine and Mississippi (−1.1 percentage points each). The increase occurred in Kansas (0.9 percentage point).
Two states had declines in layoffs and discharges rates in June: Mississippi (1.6 percent in May 2023 to 1.0 percent in June 2023) and Georgia (1.5 percent in May 2023 to 1.0 percent in June 2023).

The quits rate is the number of quits during the entire month as a percent of total employment. Therefore, the quits rate can serve as a measure of workers’ willingness or ability to leave jobs.
