Nonfarm employment rises 2.4 million from July 2015 to July 2016

Nonfarm employment rose by 2.4 million from July 2015 to July 2016, a gain of 1.7 percent. Employment in the private sector rose by 2.3 million over the year. The largest job gains over the year were in education and health services (639,000), professional and business services (550,000), and leisure and hospitality (421,000). Mining and logging lost 130,000 jobs over the year, and manufacturing employment was down 31,000 jobs. Employment in federal, state, and local government rose by 154,000 from July 2015 to July 2016.

Average hourly earnings for all employees in the private sector were $25.69 in July 2016. That was about the same as the average for education and health services ($25.70). Average hourly earnings in professional and business services were $30.88, while average earnings in leisure and hospitality were $14.92. Average hourly earnings in mining and logging were $31.94 in July, while those in manufacturing were $26.00.
