Household spending increased 4.6 percent from 2014 to 2015

The average U.S. household spent $55,978 in 2015, a 4.6-percent increase from 2014. During the same period, the Consumer Price Index (CPI-U) was virtually unchanged, rising 0.1 percent. In 2014, spending increased 4.7 percent. All major components of household spending increased in 2015.

From 2014 to 2015, among major components of household spending, personal insurance and pensions had the largest increase, rising 10.9 percent to $6,349. The increase was primarily driven by an 11.4-percent increase in spending on pensions and Social Security.

Spending on education increased 6.4 percent from 2014 to 2015. This increase was largely driven by a 63.7-percent increase in finance, late, and interest charges for student loans to $157.

From 2014 to 2015, transportation spending rose 4.7 percent to $9,503. Within transportation, spending on vehicle purchases increased 21.1 percent to $3,997, while spending on gasoline and motor oil decreased 15.3 percent to $2,090. Spending on public and other transportation rose 13.8 percent to $661.

Cash contributions increased 1.7 percent from 2014 to 2015, after falling 2.5 percent from 2013 to 2014. Cash contributions include alimony and child support payments; care of students away from home; and contributions to religious, educational, charitable, or political organizations.
