Highest percentage gains in employment in Ann Arbor, St. George, and Prescott

November 15, 2016

From September 2015 to September 2016, the largest over-the-year percentage gain in employment occurred in Ann Arbor, Michigan (+6.6 percent), followed by St. George, Utah (+6.3 percent), and Prescott, Arizona (+6.1 percent). In Ann Arbor, the increase in the number of people employed was 13,900. The employment increase in St. George was 3,700 and in Prescott, 3,800. Increases of over 5.0 percent also occurred in Madera, California; Ithaca, New York; Bend-Redmond, Oregon; and Cleveland, Tennessee.

The largest over-the-year employment increases occurred in New York-Newark-Jersey City, New York-New Jersey-Pennsylvania (+169,400), Dallas-Fort
Worth-Arlington, Texas (+122,300), and Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, California (+113,600). In Dallas, employment increased 3.6 percent from September 2015 to September 2016. In New York and Los Angeles, the percentage changes were 1.8 percent and 1.9 percent, respectively.

In September 2016, there were 315 metropolitan areas that had over-the-year increases in nonfarm payroll employment, while 65 had decreases, and 7 had no change.
