Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 142,000 in August, with the largest job gains occurring in professional and business services and in education and health services. Compared with the January 2008 employment peak at the start of the 2007–2009 recession, total nonfarm employment has risen by 753,000, or 0.5 percent.

The professional and business services industry added 47,000 jobs in August and has gained 1,265,000 jobs since January 2008. Employment in education and health services increased by 37,000 in August and by 2,627,000 since January 2008.
Construction employment continued to trend up in August (+20,000). This is in line with its average monthly job gain of 18,000 over the prior 12 months. Construction employment was 1,408,000 lower in August than it was in January 2008.
Manufacturing employment was unchanged in August, following an increase of 28,000 in July. Manufacturing employment was 1,567,000 lower in August than it was in January 2008.
