Gross job gains at expanding establishments totaled 5.7 million in first quarter 2012, an increase of 149,000 from the previous quarter.  Opening establishments accounted for 1.2 million jobs gained in first quarter 2012, a decrease of 123,000 from the previous quarter.  Gross job gains for the first quarter of 2012 (6.9 million) are the sum of increases in employment from expansions at existing units (5.7 million) and the addition of new jobs at opening units (1.2 million).

Contracting establishments lost 4.9 million jobs in first quarter 2012. This is a decrease of 303,000 from the prior quarter.  In first quarter 2012, closing establishments lost 1.2 million jobs, a decrease of 96,000 from the previous quarter.  Gross job losses (6.1 million) are the result of contractions in employment at existing units (4.9 million) and the loss of jobs at closing units (1.2 million).

The difference between the number of gross job gains (6.9 million) and the number of gross job losses (6.1 million) yielded a net employment change of 814,000 jobs in the private sector during the first quarter of 2012; this compares with 389,000 in the previous quarter, and 292,000 in the first quarter of 2011.

These data are from the Business Employment Dynamics (BED) program. The change in the number of jobs over time is the net result of increases and decreases in employment that occur at all businesses in the economy. BED statistics track these changes in employment at private business units from the third month of one quarter to the third month of the next. To learn more, see "Business Employment Dynamics — Second Quarter 2011" (HTML) (PDF), news release USDL-12-2261.
