The food preparation and serving occupational group—which includes chefs, cooks, and waiters and waitresses—was the lowest paid occupational group in November 2004.
Nearly 65 percent of the 10 million workers in this group earned less than $8.50 per hour.
Among all occupations, the five lowest-paying were related to food preparation and serving. The lowest-paying occupation was fast food cooks, who earned $7.32 per hour, on average.
