Among the four regions, the highest number of initial claims for unemployment insurance in May 2005 due to mass layoffs was in the Midwest—30,688.

Transportation equipment manufacturing accounted for almost one-third of the Midwest total, with food services and drinking places and administrative and support services together accounting for 16 percent of all mass-layoff initial claims in that region during the month.

The West had the next largest number of initial claims (28,771), followed by the South (22,693) and the Northeast (19,206).

These data are from the Mass Layoff Statistics program and are not seasonally adjusted. Each mass layoff event involves at least 50 persons from a single establishment.
