NOTE: Veterans are men and women who served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces and were not on active duty at the time of the survey. Gulf War-era II veterans served on active duty anywhere in the world sometime since September 2001. Nonveterans never served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces. Population controls for veterans, which are derived from a Department of Veterans Affairs' population model, were updated in January 2013, November 2017, and January 2020. Beginning with data for January 2014, estimates for veterans incorporate updated weighting procedures. Learn more about veterans statistics.
