Producer Price Indexes

Producer Price Index for the Pipeline Transportation of Natural Gas Industry - NAICS 486210

Producer Price Index for the Pipeline Transportation of Natural Gas Industry – NAICS 486210

As part of the ongoing effort by the Bureau of Labor Statistics to expand Producer Price Index (PPI) coverage of the services sector of the U.S. economy, a new price index for the pipeline transportation of natural gas industry was introduced into the PPI with the release of June 2022 data on July 14, 2022.  The PPI for pipeline transportation of natural gas, NAICS 486210 in the North American Industry Classification System, as well as the corresponding pipeline transportation of natural gas commodity indexes (code 301702) appear in the PPI Detailed Report and are available online through this website. These indexes complement existing PPI data for pipeline transportation of crude oil and pipeline transportation of refined petroleum products.

The indexes for the pipeline transportation of natural gas measure changes in prices received by establishments engaged in the pipeline transportation of natural gas from processing plants to local distribution systems.  These prices cover the transportation of natural gas in bulk from a seller in one location to a buyer in another, including the temporary storage services provided to rectify short-term mismatches between supply and demand.  Companies in this industry use the terminology of a ‘tariff’, which is any list or published scale of prices, charges, classifications, rules, or regulations of a common carrier that may affect, determine, or change the transportation price of the product. Natural gas pipeline carriers typically set their tariffs using a calculation based off initial investment in the pipeline along with routine maintenance and a nominal return on investment.
