Unemployment in families lower in 2022 than before COVID-19 pandemic

The proportion of families with an unemployed person shrank from 6.7 percent in 2021 to 4.7 percent in 2022. This reflects the continued labor market recovery from the February to April 2020 recession induced by the COVID-19 pandemic. The proportion of families with at least one unemployed member in 2022 was smaller than the proportion in 2019 (4.9 percent), before the pandemic.

In 2022, the proportion of families with an unemployed person declined for White (to 4.2 percent of families), Black (8.0 percent), Asian (4.3 percent), and Hispanic (6.6 percent) families. Black and Hispanic families remained more likely to have an unemployed member than White or Asian families.
The percentage of families with an unemployed family member returned to pre-pandemic levels for most major race and ethnicity groups in 2022. In 2019 the proportions were: White (4.5 percent), Black (8.0 percent), Asian (4.0 percent), and Hispanic (6.6 percent).
