New York had the lowest job openings rate in January 2023

New York had the lowest job openings rate in January 2023, at 4.5 percent. An additional three states and the District of Columbia had job openings rates under 6.0 percent: District of Columbia (5.5 percent), Connecticut (5.5 percent), California (5.6 percent), and North Dakota (5.7 percent).

West Virginia had the highest job openings rate in January 2023, at 9.2 percent, followed by Alaska (8.4 percent), Louisiana (8.4 percent), and Georgia (8.2 percent). In January 2023, 34 states had a job openings rate above the national rate of 6.5 percent.

The national job openings rate fell from 7.1 percent in January 2022 to 6.5 percent in January 2023. Over the year, 11 states had an increase in the job openings rate, with the largest occurring in West Virginia (1.6 percentage points). Maine experienced a drop of 1.8 percentage points in the job openings rate, going from 7.9 percent in January 2022 to 6.1 percent in January 2023.
