Employment increased in 111 metro areas over the year ended September 2022

In September 2022, nonfarm payroll employment increased over the year in 111 metropolitan areas and was essentially unchanged in 278 areas. A total of 36 metropolitan areas had over-the-year employment increases of at least 4.7 percent. Overall, employment in the United States increased 3.7 percent from September 2021 to September 2022.

The largest over-the-year percentage increases in employment occurred in Atlantic City-Hammonton, New Jersey (+9.8 percent), New Orleans-Metairie, Louisiana (+9.7 percent), and Houma-Thibodaux, Louisiana (+7.0 percent). Four metropolitan areas—Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, Texas; Charleston-North Charleston, South Carolina; Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land, Texas; and Nashville-Davidson--Murfreesboro--Franklin, Tennessee had employment increases of at least 6.0 percent.

Over the year ended in September 2022, nonfarm employment increased in 47 metropolitan areas with a 2010 Census population of at least 1 million, while employment was essentially unchanged in 4 of these large areas. The largest over-the-year percentage increases in employment in these large metropolitan areas occurred in New Orleans-Metairie, Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, and Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land.
