Consumer prices up 2.9 percent over 12 months ended June 2018

From June 2017 to June 2018, the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) rose 2.9 percent, the largest 12-month increase since the period ending February 2012. Over that period, energy prices rose 12.0 percent, the largest 12-month increase since the period ending February 2017.

Food prices increased 1.4 percent for the year ended June 2018. Prices for food at home increased 0.4 percent, while prices for food away from home rose 2.8 percent.

Prices for five of the six major grocery store food groups rose over the past year; meats, poultry, fish, and eggs (up 1.2 percent) was the only group for which prices rose more than 0.5 percent.

From June 2017 to June 2018, prices for all items less food and energy rose 2.3 percent. Shelter prices rose 3.4 percent over that period, while medical care prices rose 2.5 percent. Over the past 12 months, airline fares and prices for new vehicles, used cars and trucks, and communication decreased.

Within energy, fuel oil prices rose sharply, increasing 30.8 percent from June 2017 to June 2018. In contrast, natural gas prices declined 2.1 percent, and electricity prices decreased slightly, falling 0.1 percent.
