The number of job openings rose to 6.0 million on the last business day of April 2017, the highest on record for this data series. The number of hires decreased to 5.1 million over the month, and separations edged down to 5.0 million.

From March 2017 to April 2017, the number of job openings increased by 259,000, with 220,000 openings in the private sector and 39,000 in government.
The number of hires fell by 253,000 over the month, down 257,000 in the private sector and little changed in government.
The number of total separations edged down to 5.0 million in April, a decline of 225,000 over the month. Total separations decreased in the private sector by 239,000 and changed little in government.
