Employment up by 295,000 in February and 3.3 million over the year

Total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 295,000 in February 2015, compared with an average monthly gain of 266,000 over the past year. Job gains in February occurred in leisure and hospitality, professional and business services, construction, health care, and transportation and warehousing. Over the year, total nonfarm employment increased by 3.3 million.

Professional and business services added 51,000 jobs in February. Within that industry, employment continued to trend up in management and technical consulting services, computer systems design and related services, and architectural and engineering services. Over the year, employment in professional and business services rose by 660,000.

Employment in construction increased by 29,000 jobs in February. Employment in specialty trade contractors rose by 27,000, mostly among residential contractors. Over the past 12 months, construction added 321,000 jobs.

In February, transportation and warehousing added 19,000 jobs. Most of the gain occurred in couriers and messengers. Over the past 12 months, employment in transportation and warehousing increased by 192,000 jobs.

Retail trade employment continued to trend up in February. Since February 2014, employment increased by 319,000.

Employment in mining decreased by 9,000 in February, with most of the decline in support activities for mining.

Employment in other major industries changed little over the month.
