Consumer Price Index increases 1.7 percent in 2012

The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) rose 1.7 percent in 2012 after a 3.0-percent increase in 2011. This was the third smallest December-December increase of the past ten years and compares to a 2.4-percent average annual increase over the decade.

The energy index increased 0.5 percent in 2012, a sharp deceleration from its 6.6-percent increase in 2011. The gasoline index rose 1.7 percent in 2012 after increasing 13.8 percent in 2010 and 9.9 percent in 2011.
The index for food rose 1.8 percent in 2012, a deceleration from its 4.7-percent increase in 2011. The index for food at home rose 1.3 percent in 2012 compared to 6.0 percent in 2011.
The index for all items less food and energy decelerated slightly in 2012, rising 1.9 percent after a 2.2-percent increase in 2011. This matches the average annual increase of 1.9 percent over the past ten years. The apparel index, which rose 4.6 percent in 2011, increased 1.8 percent in 2012. The index for new vehicles increased 1.6 percent in 2012 after rising 3.2 percent in 2011, and the medical care index rose 3.2 percent in 2012 after a 3.5-percent increase the prior year.
