Extent of unemployment during the year by race, Hispanic origin, and sex, 1993-94 Technical information: (202) 606-6378 USDL 95-511 606-6373 For release: 10:00 A.M. EST Media contact: 606-5902 Wednesday, December 13, 1995 OVER 137 MILLION PERSONS WORKED IN 1994, 2.1 MILLION MORE THAN IN 1993 A total of 137.6 million persons held jobs all or part of 1994, according to data from the annual work experience survey released today by the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor. This was an increase of 2.1 million from 1993. At the same time, the number of persons experiencing some unemployment during the year fell to 18.9 million. These data come from supplemental questions asked each March as part of the Current Population Survey (CPS), a monthly survey of about 56,000 households conducted by the Bureau of the Census for the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The questions in the March supplement focus on employment and unemployment experience during the previous calendar year. Because the reference period is a full year, the number of persons with some employment or unemployment greatly exceeds the average levels released each month, which are based on a 1-week reference period. For example, the total number of persons experiencing unemployment for at least 1 week in 1994, as derived from the work experience survey, was nearly 2-1/2 times the average monthly level of 8.0 million. And, while 137.6 million persons worked at some time in 1994, the average monthly employment level was 123.1 million. Persons with Employment The 137.6 million persons with some work activity during 1994 made up 69.5 percent of the working-age population, 0.5 percentage point more than in 1993. The proportion of workers who worked year round, full time--at least 50 out of 52 weeks and at least 35 hours in a majority of those weeks- -increased by 0.8 percentage point to 61.7 percent. (See table 1.) Since 1979, that proportion has risen by nearly 5-1/2 percentage points, largely due to expanded work schedules among women. The increase from 1993 to 1994 in the total number of persons who worked during the year was about equally divided between men and women. Throughout most of the post-World War II period, women have made up a slightly larger proportion of employment growth, comprising about 60 percent of the increase. In 1994, the proportion of women who worked during the year rose by 0.4 percentage point to 62.5 percent. The number of women working year round on full-time schedules continued to increase, rising by nearly 650,000 to 34.1 million, representing over half of all working women. - 2 - The proportion of men with work experience during the year increased by 0.5 percentage point to 77.1 percent. Full-time, year-round employment among men rose by 1.7 million, reaching 50.8 million. About 7 in 10 men who worked during 1994 worked such schedules. The proportions of whites and Hispanics holding jobs during part or all of the year edged up in 1994. The proportion for blacks--which is lower than those for whites and Hispanics--rose from 63.5 to 64.4 percent, with a notable gain among black women. (See table 2.) Persons with Unemployment The number of persons who were unemployed at least 1 week during the year fell by 1.6 million between 1993 and 1994 to 18.9 million. The unemployed represented 13.5 percent of the labor force during 1994, down from 14.8 percent in 1993. (See table 3.) Among the race/ethnic groups, 12.7 percent of whites experienced unemployment in 1994, compared with 18.7 percent of blacks and 17.6 percent of Hispanics. The proportions for each group were lower than those posted in 1993. (See table 4.) The median weeks of unemployment declined from 15.1 in 1993 to 13.7 weeks in 1994. This estimate was down for whites (13.2 weeks) and Hispanics (15.5 weeks), while the median for blacks (18.0 weeks) was essentially unchanged from the prior year. Table 1.
