Revised seasonally adjusted average hourly and weekly earnings of Technical information: (202) 606-6555 USDL 95-507 Media contact: 606-5902 WIRE EMBARGO UNTIL 10:00 A.M. (EST) THURSDAY DECEMBER 14, 1995 REAL EARNINGS IN NOVEMBER 1995 Real average weekly earnings fell 0.4 percent from October to November after seasonal adjustment, according to preliminary data released today by the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor. This drop stemmed from a 0.3 percent decline in average weekly hours coupled with a 0.1 percent decrease in average hourly earnings. The Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) was unchanged. Data on average weekly earnings are collected from the payroll reports of private nonfarm establishments. Earnings of both full-time and part-time workers holding production or nonsupervisory jobs are included. Real average weekly earnings are calculated by adjusting earnings in current dollars for changes in the CPI-W. Average weekly earnings rose by 2.3 percent between November of 1994 and 1995 as a result of a 2.9 percent increase in average hourly earnings which was partially offset by a 0.6 percent decline in average weekly hours. After adjustment for a 2.4 percent gain in the CPI-W over the same period, real average weekly earnings fell by 0.1 percent. Before adjustment for seasonal change and deflation by the CPI-W, average weekly earnings were $399.04 in November 1995, compared with $389.94 a year earlier. _____________________________ Real Earnings for December 1995 is scheduled to be released on Friday, January 12, 1996.
