EDT Tuesday, August 2, 1994 STATE AND METROPOLITAN AREA EMPLOYMENT AND UNEMPLOYMENT: JUNE 1994 Unemployment rates were lower in June 1994 than in the prior month in 25 states, higher in 17 states and the District of Columbia, and unchanged in 8 states, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported today. The national unemployment rate was 6.0 percent in June, the same as in May. Employment on nonfarm payrolls was higher than May levels in 38 states. State Unemployment (Seasonally Adjusted) Two states--Illinois and Ohio--had declines of 1.0 percentage point in their unemployment rates from May to June. No state showed an unemployment rate decline of more than 1.0 percentage point; Florida, Mississippi, and Montana had drops between 0.5 and 1.0 percentage point. West Virginia had the largest unemployment rate increase--0.6 percentage point. It also was the only state with an unemployment rate (9.6 percent) above 8.5 percent, while 19 states had rates of 4.9 percent or below. Nebraska and South Dakota had the lowest unemployment rates, both 3.1 percent. (See table 1 and chart 1.) Nonfarm Payroll Employment (Seasonally Adjusted) Over-the-month increases in payroll employment continued in June, with gains in 38 states. Most of the monthly increases took place in the service-producing sector, with the services industry showing gains in four- fifths of the states and finance, insurance, and real estate in about one- half. In the goods-producing sector, jobs in both construction and manufacturing were up in about one-half of the states. -------------------------------------------------------------- | State and area labor force data beginning in January 1994 | |are not directly comparable with data for 1993 and prior years| |as a result of the introduction of the redesigned Current | |Population Survey. Data comparisons also are affected by the | |incorporation of 1990 census-based population controls and | |other methodological changes. These changes are described in | |greater detail in "Revisions in State and Area Estimates | |Effective January 1994" in the March 1994 issue of Employment | |and Earnings. | -------------------------------------------------------------- - 2 - Since the beginning of the year, 46 states have added jobs. Texas (+140,000 jobs) led all the states, followed by Florida (+100,000). Of those states with job losses, California (-9,000 jobs) had the most, followed by the District of Columbia (-3,000). Between June of 1993 and 1994, payroll employment increased in 48 states, and 31 of these had increases of 2 percent or more. The largest percentage increases occurred in Utah (6.7 percent), Nevada (6.5 percent), and Idaho (6.2 percent) which have consistently ranked among the top growth states in nearly every industry over the past year. The only declines were recorded in Hawaii (-1.9 percent), the District of Columbia (-0.7 percent), and California (-0.6 percent). (See chart 2.) Employment in the services industry was up in every state except Hawaii over the past year, with over four-fifths of the states having increases of 2 percent or more. Construction employment rose in over four- fifths of the states; 11 had increases in excess of 10 percent, with the largest occurring in Utah (21.6 percent), followed by Idaho (16.6 percent) and Arizona (16.3 percent). Manufacturing gains were reported in 31 states, located primarily in the central part of the nation. Trade employment increased in all states except California, Connecticut, and Hawaii and in the District of Columbia. NOTE: Monthly payroll employment data are provided on a seasonally adjusted basis for all states and the District of Columbia, permitting both current and over-the-year comparisons of the data. The state data are intended for individual state analyses only. Because the state data are not designed for national aggregation, a summation could present a misleading picture of national trends. (See Technical Note.) Metropolitan Area Unemployment (Not Seasonally Adjusted) Of the 262 areas for which June data are available, 27 areas had unemployment rates higher than 8.5 percent, while 90 had rates below 5.0 percent. McAllen-Edinburg-Mission, Tex., had the highest unemployment rate (17.2 percent), followed by Modesto, Calif. (15.5 percent). Madison, Wis. (2.3 percent), and Sioux Falls, S.D. (2.4 percent), had the lowest rates. ___________________________________________________________________________ The State and Metropolitan Area Employment and Unemployment release for July 1994 will be issued on Tuesday, August 30, 1994.
