EDT Thursday, April 28, 1994 STATE AND METROPOLITAN AREA EMPLOYMENT AND UNEMPLOYMENT: MARCH 1994 Unemployment rates were lower in March than in February in 25 states, higher in 23 states and the District of Columbia, and unchanged in 2 states, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported today. The national unemployment rate was 6.5 percent in both February and March. Nonfarm payroll employment was higher in March than the month before in 41 states. State Unemployment (Seasonally Adjusted) Michigan had the sharpest over-the-month drop in its unemployment rate--1.4 percentage points. Three other states had declines of almost 1 percentage point in their unemployment rates--New Hampshire, North Carolina, and Oregon. In contrast, the jobless rates in Pennsylvania and Florida increased about 1-1/2 percentage points from February to March. No other state had an unemployment rate increase greater than 1 percentage point. (See table 1.) California, the District of Columbia, and West Virginia had rates above 8.5 percent in March, while 13 states had rates below 5 percent. (See map 1.) Nonfarm Payroll Employment (Seasonally Adjusted) From February to March, construction employment increased in almost three-fourths of the states, and over four-fifths reported job gains in manufacturing and services. (See table 3.) NOTE: The state data are intended for individual state analyses only and are not designed for national aggregation. Any summation could present a misleading picture of national trends. (See Technical Note.) Nonfarm Payroll Employment (Not Seasonally Adjusted) Between March of 1993 and 1994, payroll employment increased in all but three states; the gain was 2.0 percent or more in 33 states. The largest percentage increases occurred in Nevada (7.4 percent), Idaho (6.8 percent), and Utah (6.3 percent). Declines were recorded in the District of Columbia (-1.4 percent), Hawaii (-1.3 percent), California (-0.7 percent), and Connecticut (-0.2 percent). (See map 2.) Construction employment was up in nine-tenths of the states; seven states had increases in excess of 15 percent. All but one state, Hawaii, reported over-the-year increases in services. Finance, insurance, and real estate was up in 47 states, while at least 40 states had employment increases in transportation and public utilities, trade, and government. - 2 - Three-fifths of the states had gains in manufacturing employment over the year. (See table 4.) Metropolitan Area Unemployment (Not Seasonally Adjusted) Of the 261 areas for which March data are available, 35 areas had unemployment rates of 8.5 percent or higher, while 69 had rates of below 5.0 percent. Fresno, Calif., had the highest unemployment rate (18.1 percent), followed by McAllen-Edinburg-Mission, Tex. (16.8 percent), and Modesto, Calif. (16.5 percent). The lowest rate was in Iowa City, Iowa (2.3 percent), followed by Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill, N.C. (2.4 percent), and Lincoln, Neb. (2.5 percent). ___________________________________________________________________________ The State and Metropolitan Area Employment and Unemployment release for April 1994 will be issued on Wednesday, June 1. -------------------------------------------------------------- | State and area labor force data beginning in January 1994| |are not directly comparable with data for 1993 and prior years| |as a result of the introduction of the redesigned Current | |Population Survey.
