Seminars and Consultations

Seminars

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) conducts international training seminars on select topics related to labor and price statistics. The seminars include lectures, discussions, and workshops and are designed to strengthen the participants' ability to collect, analyze, produce, and use labor and price statistics. BLS international training seminars emphasize highly specialized techniques and, more importantly, the practical aspects of conducting labor and price statistics programs on a day-to-day basis. Seminars provide a forum for participants to hear firsthand from BLS subject matter experts about their experiences carrying out specific statistical programs, to include problems encountered and solutions adopted.

BLS training seminars bring together statisticians, economists, analysts, and other data users from countries all over the world and are designed for staff of national statistical offices, and other governmental agencies and international organizations. Participants should process an elementary knowledge of statistics and have some experience producing and analyzing labor or social data.

Seminars on the following topics are conducted, either in-person at the Bureau’s training facilities in Washington, D.C., or virtually, for groups of three or more, upon request:

Customized seminars on other topics related to labor statistics such as occupational safety and health statistics; compensation statistics; employment projections; or survey methods may also be conducted.

BLS may hold overseas seminars on selected topics in economic and labor statistics for participants from a particular country or region. Due to the lead-time required to plan an overseas seminar, requests for such programs should be submitted to BLS at least six months in advance of the desired starting date.

Seminars typically range in duration from a few days to a week but may be as short as one day or as long as two weeks. The content of each program can be uniquely designed to meet the needs of the participants. The cost of each program depends upon the program duration, the number of instructors required, and any related administrative expenses.

All BLS international training seminars are conducted in English, and a reading knowledge of English is desirable. Participants who are not proficient in English must arrange for and finance simultaneous interpretation.

Additional information about the seminar programs of the BLS, to include tuition costs, may be obtained by submitting an online inquiry to staff in the BLS Division of International Technical Cooperation (ITC).

Consultations

BLS makes available technical experts to serve as consultants overseas, at the request of individual governments or international organizations. Consultants work with country statisticians to improve or implement labor statistics or price programs; they may also provide training during their visits. Consultations are usually planned for two weeks and may combine training in the Washington, D.C.-area with overseas consulting and training.

The cost of these services includes the expert's salary and benefits for the duration of the consultation, airfare, lodging, meals, and other expenses, as well as an administrative fee.

To request a consultation, please submit an online inquiry. Requests should include a clear statement of the purpose of the consultation. Due to the planning time required, requests for consultations should be submitted to BLS at least six months in advance of the desired starting date.
