CONSUMER PRICE INDEX (CPI) FOR KANSAS CITY, MO-KS
Prices increase 2.2 percent from the second half of 2006 to the second half of 2007
The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) for the Kansas City metropolitan area increased 2.2 percent from the second half of 2006 to the second half of 2007, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. According to Regional Commissioner Stanley W. Suchman, rising prices for energy, led by higher gasoline prices, accounted for approximately half of the increase in the overall index. Energy prices, which include prices for motor fuel and household fuels, advanced 12.7 percent over the year. Excluding the impact of volatile energy prices, the Kansas City CPI was up 1.3 percent from the second half of 2006 to the second half 2007. Core inflation (as measured by the index for all items less food and energy) was 0.9 percent higher over the year.
Among the eight major expenditure categories, housing and transportation had the most impact on the overall index. The housing index rose 2.5 percent from the second half of 2006 to the second half of 2007. Shelter costs were up 1.8 percent, with rent of primary residence rising 3.4 percent and owners' equivalent rent of primary residence increasing 1.6 percent. Prices for fuels and utilities advanced 6.7 percent. Within fuels and utilities, electricity costs rose 10.7 percent, the largest over-the-year increase since semi-annual publication of the index began in 1987. The index for utility (piped) gas service increased 3.2 percent from the second half of 2006 to the second half of 2007 following a decline of 7.6 percent over the same period one year ago. Prices for household furnishings and operations rose 1.8 percent over the year.
Transportation prices increased 3.9 percent over the year. Private transportation costs, which include prices for vehicles and motor fuel, rose 3.7 percent. Motor fuel prices in the Kansas City metropolitan area advanced 17.4 percent from the second half of 2006 to the second half of 2007, following a 2.8 percent increase in the previous year.
Also pushing the overall index higher, food and beverages prices increased 3.6 percent from the second half of 2006 to the second half of 2007. Food at home prices rose 5.3 percent, the largest over-the-year increase since 1997, and the cost of food away from home was up 2.8 percent. Prices for alcoholic beverages increased 1.6 percent over the same period.
The remaining five major expenditure categories accounted for only about one-fifth of the movement in the overall index. The apparel index declined 3.8 percent from the second half of 2006 to the second half of 2007 following an increase of 6.6 percent in the previous year. Recreation prices, which include admissions to movies, concerts, and sporting events, decreased 1.9 percent. Medical care charges rose 1.2 percent over the year after advancing 5.5 percent in the same period one year ago. Costs for education and communication rose 1.1 percent from the second half of 2006 to the second half of 2007. The other goods and services index, which includes prices for tobacco and smoking products and personal care items, increased 1.2 percent over the same period.
The Kansas City CPI-U stood at 195.753 for the second half of 2007. This means that a market basket of goods and services that cost $100.00 in 1982-84 cost $195.75 in the second half of 2007. Because metropolitan area CPI data are not adjusted for seasonal price variation, consumers and businesses should be cautious in drawing conclusions about long-term retail price trends from short-term changes in the metropolitan area indexes.
