Consumer prices up 1.0 percent from May 2015 to May 2016

The Consumer Price Index for all Urban Consumers rose 1.0 percent from May 2015 to May 2016. Over that same period, prices for all items less food and energy rose 2.2 percent. The food index rose 0.7 percent over the past year, with the index for food at home declining 0.7 percent and the index for food away from home rising 2.6 percent. The energy index declined 10.1 percent from May 2015 to May 2016, with prices for all major energy categories falling during that period.

The index for all items less food and energy increased 2.2 percent from May 2015 to May 2016. More than 60 percent of this increase resulted from a 3.4-percent gain in the shelter index, its largest 12-month increase since September 2007. The rent index increased 3.8 percent over the past year, while the index for owners' equivalent rent rose 3.3 percent and the index for lodging away from home rose 3.8 percent
