Productivity in manufacturing—as measured by output per hour—increased at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 2.1 percent in the first quarter of 2003.

Output decreased 0.6 percent and hours of all persons declined 2.6 percent in the first quarter. Productivity had fallen 0.5 percent in the fourth quarter of 2002, as output decreased 3.7 percent and hours declined 3.2 percent.
