Changes in Federal and State unemployment insurance legislation, 2006

One Federal enactment affected the Federal-State unemployment insurance program during 2006. The Katrina Emergency Assistance Act of 2006 (P.L. 109-176) was signed on March 6, 2006. The act provides that unemployment assistance as a result of disaster declarations made for Hurricanes Katrina and Rita (on or after August 29, 2005) will be made available for 39 weeks (an additional 13 weeks beyond the 26 weeks allowed) after the date of the disaster declarations.
