EST Thursday, March 9, 1995 STATE AND METROPOLITAN AREA EMPLOYMENT AND UNEMPLOYMENT: JANUARY 1995 Unemployment rates in January 1995 were lower than a month earlier in 34 states and the District of Columbia, higher in 13 states, and unchanged in 3 states, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported today. The national unemployment rate was 5.7 percent, up from 5.4 percent in the previous month. Nonfarm payroll employment rose in 28 states over the month. State Unemployment (Seasonally Adjusted) Three states--Louisiana, Maine, and Mississippi--experienced over-the- month drops in their unemployment rates of 1.0 percentage point or more. Jobless rates in Arizona and Idaho decreased 0.9 percentage point, while Wisconsin's rate declined 0.8 point. New Jersey had the largest over-the- month increase, 1.0 percentage point, followed closely by Michigan, up 0.9 percentage point. Comparing unemployment rates in January 1995 to a year earlier, all states except Hawaii, New Jersey, and Utah experienced decreases. Three states--Maine, Ohio, and West Virginia--had unemployment rates at least 2.0 percentage points lower than in January 1994, while 21 states showed declines ranging from 1.0 to 1.9 points. California, at 8.2 percent, had the highest jobless rate in January, followed by West Virginia, at 7.9 percent. Nebraska again had the lowest rate (2.3 percent), as it had all of last year. Seventeen other states had unemployment rates below 4.5 percent. (See chart 1.) -------------------------------------------------------------- | Effective with the release of January 1995 data, state | |labor force estimates have been revised to reflect the | |introduction of revised 1990 census-based population controls | |for all states and the implementation of updated inputs to | |the regression models for the 39 nondirect-use states and the | |District of Columbia. All seasonally adjusted series have | |been revised back to 1990. In addition, nine new areas have | |been added to table 5. | | Also effective with January estimates, all nonfarm payroll| |employment series have been adjusted to March 1994 benchmark | |levels. These revisions affect data from April 1993 forward. | |Seasonally adjusted data back to 1990 have been revised based | |on the recomputation of seasonal adjustment factors. | -------------------------------------------------------------- - 2 - Nonfarm Payroll Employment (Seasonally Adjusted) Twenty-eight states recorded gains in nonfarm payroll employment in January. Over-the-month employment growth continued in the goods-producing sector, where 33 states reported gains in manufacturing and construction jobs. The services and trade industries, which often dominate job growth, showed increases in only half of the states. Of the 22 states and District of Columbia experiencing January job losses, most were attributable to declines in trade and services. States in the Mountain division had the strongest employment increases, while losses occurred for most states in the East South Central and New England divisions. California employment was adversely affected by severe flooding. (See table 3.) Every state experienced employment growth between January 1994 and January 1995, ranging from 7.3 percent in Nevada to 0.2 percent in Hawaii. Over-the-year increases in trade and services continued in all states, and 48 states added construction jobs. Manufacturing employment rose in 40 states during this period. The District of Columbia had the only over-the- year job losses. (See chart 2.) NOTE: Monthly payroll employment data are provided on a seasonally adjusted basis for all states and the District of Columbia, permitting both current and over-the-year comparisons of the data. The state data are intended for individual state analyses only. Because the state data are not designed for national aggregation, a summation could present a misleading picture of national trends. (See Technical Note.) Metropolitan Areas (Not Seasonally Adjusted) Of the 270 areas for which January data are available, 79 had unemployment rates below 4.5 percent, while 35 had rates of 7.8 percent and above. McAllen-Edinburgh-Mission, Tex., continued to have the highest unemployment rate--20.3 percent. The lowest rates were in Madison, Wis. (2.3 percent), and Iowa City, Iowa, and Lincoln, Neb. (both 2.7 percent). _________________________________________________________________________ The State and Metropolitan Area Employment and Unemployment release for February 1995 will be issued on Thursday, April 4, 1995.
